For the second year in a row, Harford Community College’s student multimedia publication is best in the nation for video. Owl Magazine’s YouTube channel won first place in the Pinnacle Award category of Best Two-Year TV Station of the Year for 2016-2017.
While many staff members contributed to these production efforts, the following students were involved as either on-air talent, videographers and/or video editors for the award-winning entries: Megan Malkus, Sydney Gaeth, and Matthew Dudley for “From Farm to Table”; Adeyemi Ekundayo, Bre Mascetti, Maddie Ritchey, and Julia Whiteford for “Philly and Steaks”; and Nick DeMent, Kirsten Johnson, and Reed Freeman for “The 45th Presidential Inauguration.”
The staff also won an Honorable Mention for Best TV Special Event Coverage for the “45th Presidential Inauguration” video; HCC was the only two-year college to be recognized in this category.
The awards were announced at the Fall National College Media Convention, held in Dallas, Texas from October 25 to 29.
Video topics are chosen based on their relevancy to the current theme of Owl Magazine. The Fall/Winter 2016 theme was “Self-Sufficiency” while the current issue’s theme is “Travel/Adventure.”
Owl Magazine has been producing videos since the fall of 2014. The multimedia publication has won a total of 11 national awards. Claudia Brown, Professor of Mass Communications, is the Chief Adviser of Owl Magazine. Matt Tennyson, an HCC alum, acted as a Video Production Adviser for the spring of 2017.
In addition to a YouTube channel, Owl Magazine also shares digital content via its Facebook page and Instagram account. Copies of Owl Magazine’s print publication can be found on HCC’s campus, in libraries, schools, and in a variety of local businesses.
